Mission StatementThe AIMS Diversity Committee provides leadership and serves as a resource for member schools to further best practices in diversity, multiculturalism, equity, justice, and inclusion. The committee actively educates global citizens by advancing inclusiveness in our school communities through challenging bias, building cultural competency, and supporting diversity initiatives.

Overview
Southeast Michigan Diversity Committee for Independent Schools is an organization made up of Heads of Schools, Directors, Diversity Coordinators and other professionals interested in addressing diversity issues in their school communities. The Southeast Michigan group is the first satellite committee of the Midwest Diversity Committee for Independent Schools, which serves over 200 schools in 15 states. The Southeast Michigan Committee serves all of the independent (private and parochial) schools in the state of Michigan and is open to any school dedicated to the philosophy and mission of the organization. It is closely affiliated with AIMS (Association of Michigan Independent Schools) and ISACS (Independent Schools Association of the Central States.)
History
The Southeast Michigan Diversity Committee for Independent Schools began meeting in May 1997, chaired until 2000 by Debra Spann, Director of Multicultural Programs for Cranbrook Schools and a founding member of the Midwest Diversity Committee for Independent Schools based in Chicago. The Southeast Michigan Diversity Committee originated with representatives from Cranbrook Schools, The Roeper School, Greenhills School, Detroit Country Day School, Brother Rice, Gibson School, Japhet School and Friends School. Over the years, it has expanded to include representation from other independent schools throughout the states of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, committed to raising awareness of diversity issues among our communities.
The committee has also hosted several Midwest Diversity Committee meetings, which brought the Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri and Kentucky representatives to metropolitan Detroit area.
